Barred Owl

SPECIES: Strix varia

 

STATUS: Least Concern

 

HABITAT: Wooded habitats of coniferous or deciduous trees near a water source.

 

DIET: Small rodents, rabbits, birds, frogs and snakes.

 

GENERAL:  The Barred Owl and the Spotted Owl can sometimes be confused with each other upon first sighting them but there are differences to easily distinguish the two species. The Spotted Owl has a more pronounced “X” in the middle of  their facial disc and lack the vertical barring on the abdomen as the Barred Owl has.
