What is an Insect?

Definition of INSECT

1: any of numerous small invertebrate animals (as spiders or centipedes) that are more or less obviously segmented —not used technically

2: any of a class (Insecta) of arthropods (as bugs or bees) with well-defined head, thorax, and abdomen, only three pairs of legs, and typically one or two pairs of wings

 (reference: Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary)

Insects are the most numerous of the animal kingdom, the number of species is estimated to be around one million species worldwide and representing over 90% of all species on earth.

Insects have an exoskeleton, a three part body-head, thorax and the abdomen, three pairs of jointed legs, compound eyes and one pair of antennae, and they can be found in almost all environments.
