   WESTERN BLACK RAT SNAKE

 

SPECIES: Pantherophis obsoletus

 

STATUS: Least Concern

 

HABITAT: Rocky areas and farmland

 

DIET: Rats, mice, moles, voles, frogs, lizards, small rabbits, song birds, and eggs.

 

GENERAL: During the winter months the Western Black Rat Snake dens with Copperheads and Rattlesnakes.

 

They are known by several other names: Black Chicken Snake, Mountain Black Snake, Pilot Snake, and other names as well.

 

This is one of the largest snakes in North American getting upwards to 6 feet in length.
