AFRICAN BULLFROG
SPECIES: Pyxicephalus adspersus
STATUS: Least Concern
HABITAT: Drier savanna’s that flood during the rainy season.
DIET: Being voracious eaters an adult will eat small rodents, insects, reptiles, birds and other frogs.
GENERAL: The beginning of the rainy season coincides with the African Bullfrogs breeding season, which begins in November.
After the male secures a pool of water for himself from other invading males he calls out to the females. After breeding and the 3,000 to 4,000 eggs are laid the female leaves and the male takes over as mom. He will watch over the eggs until they hatch and then protect the tadpoles from predators.

When the climate in the African Bullfrogs range becomes dryer the frog will burrow underground and surround itself in a cocoon made from old skin which help seal in moister; by doing this the frog goes into estivation, a type of hibernation, that the African Bullfrog will stay in until the rainy season.

The African Bullfrog is the largest species of frog in Africa, males can get up to 9 inches and weight up to four pounds; females generally get to be around 5 inches and weigh around a pound and a half.
The African Bullfrog ranges from South Africa northward to Kenya.
