RIO GRANDE WILD TURKEY

 

SPECIES: Meleagris gallopavo intermedia

 

STATUS: Least Concern

 

HABITAT: Forested areas with clearings.

 

DIET: Acorns, seeds, nuts, berries, insects, frogs, lizards and small snakes.

 

GENERAL: Despite peoples thinking that turkeys cannot fly they are actually quite capable of flying for more than a quarter mile in distance, the domestic turkey though is incapable of flight.

 

There are six subspecies of Wild Turkey.

Eastern Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris)

Osceola Wild Turkey or Florida Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo osceola)

Rio Grande Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo intermedia)

Merriam’s Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo merriami)

Gould’s Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo mexicana)

South Mexican Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo gallopavo)
