  PROTHONOTARY WARBLER

 

SPECIES: Protonotaria citrea

STATUS: Least Concern

HABITAT: Wooded swamps, near ponds, rivers and other slow-moving waters.

DIET:  Insects, arachnids and occasionally seeds.

GENERAL:  After arriving to the nesting grounds in early April males establish territories by singing, doing dances and fighting with other males.

Once the females arrive and after courting the female builds the nest, which are usually in old woodpecker cavities and sometimes birdhouses, lined with moss, leaves, and twigs.

The word Prothonotary comes from a group of officials in the Catholic Church who wear bright yellow hoods.
